Can I renew all types of motor vehicle licenses at the Sheriff’s Tax Office?

No, the Upshur County Sheriff’s Office issues only regular Class A and Class G license renewals.

Can I renew my motorcycle license at the Sheriff’s Tax Office?
Yes, if you have a regular Class G license.

If my license is expired can I still get them at the Sheriff’s Office?
Yes

Is there an additional fee for renewing my license at the Sheriff’s Tax Office?
Yes, you will need to add one dollar to the amount on each renewal card for a one year renewal and two dollars on each renewal card for a two year renewal.

How do I make out my check?
All payments for renewals presented at our office are made payable to the Sheriff of Upshur County.

Can I get a two year renewal at the Sheriff’s Tax Office?
Yes

I did not receive my renewal card from the West Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Can I still get a renewal at the Sheriff’s Tax Office?
Yes

I did not receive my regular registration card from the West Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles after receiving a temporary from the Sheriff’s Tax Office.

My name listed on my registration card is no longer accurate. Can you change it for me?
No, our office cannot change names, add names or delete names on a registration card. This must be handled directly with the West Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles.

My address listed on my registration card is no longer accurate. Can you change it for me?
Yes, at the time of renewal, our office can submit a change of address to the Department of Motor Vehicles.

If I am renewing with the Sheriff’s Tax Office, can I send my renewal by mail?
No, local Sheriff’s Offices are not authorized by the Department of Motor Vehicles to issue license renewals by mail. However, you can mail your renewal information to the Charleston, WV office of the Department of Motor Vehicles.

FREQUENTLY OVERLOOKED ITEMS:

·Insurance information must be filled in on the back of the registration card for the vehicle listed on the card. Insurance must be valid as of the day the registration is presented for renewal.

·Personal Property Tax Receipt - Please refer to the instructions on the renewal notice for the proper receipt information. Our office does look up this information for Upshur County residents.  If you were a resident of another WV county during the applicable receipting period, you will need to obtain a copy of the receipt from the applicable county. **If you did not own a vehicle or reside in West Virginia on July 1st of the applicable tax year, an affidavit of exemption from the Upshur County Assessor’s Office may be used in lieu of a personal property tax receipt.
